Volunteer

Each team has a Lead Cook who oversees meal planning, preparation and volunteer coordination.​ We ensure at least one team member has Food Safe Certification and all safety precautions are followed.

​No special experience is required, but if you have special skills or training to bring to the team, please let us know so we can make the most of your time and efforts.

Volunteer Roles

Volunteer as Lead Cook

Responsibilities:
Oversee meal planning, preparation and volunteer coordination; prepare approximately 50 meals with, and supervise team of, 3-4 volunteer Kitchen Helpers.

Requirements:
Food Safe Certification

Time Commitment:
Approx. 5-6 hours, twice per month.

Volunteer as a Kitchen Helper

Responsibilities:
Take direction from Lead Cook and work with other Kitchen Helpers to perform meal preparation such as peeling vegetables, portioning, and washing dishes.

Requirements:
Food Safe Certification optional, but beneficial

Time Commitment:
Approx. 3-4 hours, twice per month.

Volunteer as a Delivery Driver

Responsibilities:
Deliver meals to clients throughout Sooke, within a 10-minute drive radius of the Community Hall.

Requirements:
Valid drivers license, vehicle and insurance. We reimburse drivers at 70¢/km.

Time Commitment:
Approx. 90 minutes, twice per month.

Volunteer as a Grocery Shopper

Responsibilities:
Shop for groceries to be used in the preparation of meals.

Requirements:
Valid drivers license, vehicle and insurance.

Time Commitment:
6-8 hours per month over two trips.

Responsibilities:
Manage confidential client records, from onboarding to ongoing requests; interface with clients and our kitchen teams.

Requirements:
Computer savvy; organized, detail orientated and good written and verbal communication skills.

Time Commitment:
1-3 hours per week, flexible and intermittent.

Responsibilities:
Coordinate and schedule meal delivery drivers.

Requirements:
Good with logistics and maps; organized, detail orientated and good written and verbal communication skills.

Time Commitment:
1-3 hours per week, flexible and intermittent.

  • Responsibilities:
    Coordinate shift scheduling of all volunteers, but most often of kitchen helpers, delivery drivers and grocery shoppers.
  • Requirements:
    Experience scheduling people, shifts and jobs. Organized, detail orientated and good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Time Commitment:
    1-3 hours per week, flexible and intermittent.
Volunteer as a Board Member
  • Responsibilities:
    Assist in the planning, running and organization of Sooke Meals on Wheels.
  • Requirements: N/A
  • Time Commitment:
    Attend 4 meetings yearly plus AGM.
